How to Check Maths Homework Without Doing It for Your Child
Checking homework effectively means finding errors without solving problems yourself. This method works for parents with any level of maths confidence.

One of the most common conversations I had with parents in my 15 years of teaching went something like this: "I check his homework every night, but I'm not confident enough in maths to know if his working is right. I end up either doing it for him or just checking if he got an answer."
Neither approach is ideal. Doing it for him provides no learning. Just checking for a final answer misses the point entirely — in HK primary maths exams, working is marked separately from answers, and a correct answer with wrong working still loses marks.
What parents need is a method for checking that identifies real errors without requiring them to independently solve every problem. Here it is.
The Three-Level Checking Method
Level 1: The Answer Check (30 seconds per question)
This is the check most parents already do. But do it with purpose:
- Is there an answer? (Not just working)
- Is there a unit? (cm, kg, $, etc.)
- Is the answer in roughly the right range? (A weight shouldn't be 400 kg; a class doesn't have 250 students)
Level 1 catches: missing answers, missing units, wildly wrong values.
For Level 1, you don't need to know how to solve the problem. You just need to apply basic sanity checks. A pace of 30 seconds per question is realistic.
Level 2: The Working Audit (2 minutes per question for flagged items)
For any question that fails Level 1 (wrong-looking answer, missing unit), examine the working:
Step 1: Are the steps numbered or clearly laid out? If the working is a jumbled mess of numbers, the child isn't working systematically. This is a habits issue, not a content issue.
Step 2: Does the first step make sense? You don't need to check every line — just the first one. For a word problem, the first step should be identifying the key operation. If the question involves "finding the total" but the first calculation is a subtraction, something has gone wrong in interpretation.
Step 3: Can you see what each step is doing? Ask your child to "talk you through" the working. "What are you calculating here? Why did you do this?" A child who can't explain their own working has memorised a procedure without understanding it.
Step 4: Are the numbers flowing correctly from step to step? Check that the output of each step feeds correctly into the next. Transcription errors (writing 36 when you calculated 63) are invisible unless you trace the chain.
Level 2 doesn't require you to independently solve the problem. It requires you to follow your child's working and check whether it's internally consistent.
Level 3: Targeted Re-working (for persistent errors only)
When the same type of error appears on multiple questions, it's a pattern worth addressing specifically. At this level, you do need to either work through the problem type yourself (using the textbook or a solution guide) or ask your child's teacher.
But Level 3 is not for every error — only for patterns. Most homework checking should stay at Levels 1 and 2.
Questions That Help Without Giving Answers
When you find an error, your goal is to help your child find and correct it themselves — not to tell them the right answer. These questions achieve that:
"What was the question asking for?" Redirects attention to the problem statement. Many errors come from answering a slightly different question than was asked.
"What did you do first? Why?" Surfaces whether the first step was correct. If the reasoning for the first step is wrong, the subsequent steps don't matter.
"What does that number represent?" Forces the child to connect abstract numbers to real-world meaning. "24" — 24 what? 24 apples? 24 minutes? 24 km/h?
"Does that answer seem reasonable?" Builds the estimation habit discussed in my article on estimation skills. Asking this question regularly makes it automatic.
"Can you explain this step to me?" If they can't explain it, they don't understand it. If they can explain it and it's wrong, they've explained the misconception clearly enough for you to address.
"What would happen if you changed this number?" For persistent confusion, changing one value in a problem often reveals whether the procedure is understood or just memorised. If 3 boxes of 4 apples = 12 apples, what about 5 boxes of 4 apples? If your child calculates 20, they understand multiplication. If they calculate 13 (adding 1 to 12), they're pattern-matching without understanding.
When to Just Check the Answer
There are situations where deep checking isn't necessary or appropriate:
- Consolidation practice on mastered skills: If your child has been doing multiplication accurately for 3 months, it's fine to just spot-check answers rather than audit all working.
- First introduction to new content: Let the teacher lead new learning. Your role at home is support, not re-teaching.
- When your child is exhausted: A tired child getting through homework is completing a task. Demanding deep explanation at 9pm is counterproductive.
Save the Level 2 checks for questions your child found difficult, and for the regular "sample check" (audit 3–4 random questions from any homework set to catch emerging patterns).
The Confidence Problem
Many HK parents feel their own maths isn't strong enough to check homework. This is almost always an underestimate of their ability.
You don't need to solve P5 ratio problems from scratch. You need to check whether your child's working is internally consistent, their reasoning makes sense, and their answer passes basic sanity checks. These skills require number sense, not curriculum expertise.
The parents who help most with maths homework aren't the ones who know all the content — they're the ones who ask good questions and create the habit of self-checking. That's teachable, and it starts tonight.
