Fractions: The Topic Where P4 Maths Gets Real
P4 fractions are the steepest difficulty cliff in the Hong Kong primary maths curriculum. Here's why — and how to help your child climb it.

It's parents' evening. Your daughter's P4 maths teacher says something that sounds almost casual: "She's doing well, but fractions will be the big topic next term." You nod. Fractions. How hard can they be? You did fractions. Everyone did fractions.
Then next term arrives. Your daughter — the same child who sailed through P3 multiplication — is suddenly struggling. Homework takes twice as long. Marks drop. She says "I hate maths" for the first time. You're baffled.
Welcome to the P4 fractions cliff. I've watched thousands of students hit this wall over 15 years of teaching. It is the single steepest difficulty jump in the entire Hong Kong primary maths curriculum, and most families don't see it coming.
Why Fractions Are Different
Everything your child learned in P1 to P3 maths follows a comforting logic: bigger numbers are worth more, addition makes things bigger, subtraction makes things smaller. These rules are intuitive. They match physical reality.
Fractions break every one of these rules.
One-half is bigger than one-third, even though 2 is smaller than 3. Multiplying by a fraction makes something smaller. A number can be divided into pieces that are somehow still part of the same whole. None of this is intuitive. Your child's brain has to fundamentally rewire its understanding of what numbers mean.
From our analysis of over 25,000 P4 maths submissions, the error rate on fraction questions is 38% — compared to 17% on whole-number arithmetic in the same year group. That's more than double. And the errors aren't random — they cluster around a small number of specific misconceptions.
The Three Misconceptions That Cause 80% of Errors
Misconception 1: "Bigger denominator means bigger fraction."
This is the most common error we see. Your child looks at 1/4 and 1/8 and concludes that 1/8 is bigger because 8 is bigger than 4. It makes perfect sense if you've spent three years learning that bigger numbers are worth more. It's completely wrong.
The fix: The "Pizza Test." Before any written work on comparing fractions, spend five minutes with a real piece of paper. Fold it into quarters. Cut one quarter out. Then fold another piece into eighths. Cut one eighth out. Place them side by side. Your child can see — physically, with their eyes — that the quarter is bigger. Do this three times with different fractions. The visual memory overrides the numerical instinct.
Misconception 2: "Add the tops, add the bottoms."
When children see 1/3 + 1/4, many write 2/7. They're applying whole-number addition logic to fractions: add the numerators, add the denominators. It's consistent reasoning — just consistently wrong.
The fix: Go back to the pizza. If you eat one slice out of three, and then one slice out of four, have you eaten two slices out of seven? Obviously not — the slices are different sizes. Making this physical makes the absurdity obvious. Then introduce the common denominator method as a tool for making the slices the same size. Not as an arbitrary rule — as a solution to a problem they now understand.
Misconception 3: "Fractions aren't real numbers."
Many P4 students treat fractions as two separate numbers stacked on top of each other rather than a single value. They don't truly believe that 3/4 lives on the number line between 0 and 1, right next to 0.75. This conceptual gap causes problems with ordering, equivalence, and word problems.
The fix: The "Number Line Walk." Draw a number line from 0 to 2 on a long piece of paper (use the back of wallpaper or tape several A4 sheets together). Mark the whole numbers. Then ask your child to place fraction cards on the line: where does 1/2 go? Where does 3/4 go? Where does 5/4 go? The physical act of placing fractions on a continuous line — alongside whole numbers — builds the understanding that fractions are real, legitimate numbers with a position and a value.
The Hidden Skill: Fraction Sense
Here's something most parents haven't heard of: fraction sense. It's the equivalent of number sense but for fractions — an intuitive feel for the relative size of fractions that lets your child estimate, compare, and sanity-check their answers without calculating.
A child with strong fraction sense knows immediately that 7/8 is close to 1, that 1/5 is small, and that 3/4 is bigger than 2/3 without finding common denominators. This isn't taught explicitly in most Hong Kong classrooms. But it's the single best predictor of success with fractions.
How to build it: the "Estimation Game." At dinner, cut something into pieces — a sandwich, a piece of fruit, anything. Ask: "About what fraction is left?" Not exact — approximate. "Is it closer to one-half or one-third?" Do this casually, two or three times a week. Within a month, your child will have an intuitive sense for fraction size that no worksheet can provide.
The Curriculum Timeline
Here's what's coming in the P4 fractions unit, so you can prepare:
Term 1: Introduction to fractions, comparing fractions with like denominators, equivalent fractions. This is the foundation — if it's shaky, everything after collapses.
Term 2: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, mixed numbers, improper fractions. This is the cliff. The difficulty jump from Term 1 to Term 2 is enormous.
If your child is currently in P4 Term 1 and getting 70% or below on fraction work, act now. Don't wait for Term 2. The gap will only widen. Use the Pizza Test, the Number Line Walk, and the Estimation Game this month. Fifteen minutes, three times a week. By Term 2, your child will have the conceptual foundation to handle the procedural complexity.
Your Plan for This Week
Tonight: Draw a number line from 0 to 2. Give your child five fraction cards (1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/3, 5/4) and ask them to place each one. No pencil work — just placement and discussion. Ten minutes.
Tomorrow: At dinner, cut something into pieces. Ask "about what fraction is left?" twice during the meal. Keep it casual.
This weekend: Do the Pizza Test with paper folding. Compare 1/4 vs 1/8, then 1/3 vs 1/6. Physical, hands-on, no worksheets.
Fractions are where P4 maths gets real. But your child doesn't have to hit the wall to learn to climb it. A bit of preparation now saves a lot of frustration later.
The P4 fractions cliff is steep, but it's climbable. Start with hands and eyes before pencils and paper — the understanding will follow.
